Finding good flamenco dancing as a tourist is not easy. There are many "tablaos" throughout Spain that cater to the tourist industry but the quality of the flamenco is
not reliable.
Although flamenco originated in Andalucia, Madrid has long been an important
center with many artists moving there perform. It boasts a vibrant flamenco community ranging from the top rated professionals to hopeful amateurs from the outer working class suburbs. Historically many flamencos were employed in the several commercial "tablaos" scattered around the city. These are still the easiest way for most tourists to gain access to good - if somewhat choreographed - flamenco.
A wonderful, authentic free-entry flamenco bar. It is a small tiled cafe where singers, guitarists and dancers walk in and play. Camaron de la Isla is supposed to have arrived one night and sung until 10am. One night, we stayed in the back room and saw totem faced Andalucian gitanos necking bottles of Bacardi, and playing the most gut-wrenching bare-souled music you could witness.
Since its inauguration in 1956 it has put on shows with all the major flamenco artists like Antonio Gades, Lucero Tena and Pastora Imperio. The shows cost around 32 Euros, whilst a show plus dinner will set you back 72 Euros. Though the menus are impressive, most people would recommend going for dinner first and then on to the show.
For nearly 30 years, Corral de la Pacheca has hosted flamenco shows. This company of dancers, singers, and guitarists is of the highest caliber. The club, which also serves dinner, has a warm, yet quite grand, ambience. The decor features ceramic floors: exquisite azulejo tile work.
